DENVER – Cameron's historic NCAA National Tournament run came to a halt on Thursday at the hands of No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific 5-1 at the Gates Tennis Center.
The No. 15 Aggies were entering uncharted territory after beating California (Pa.) 5-2 in the tournament's opening round for the first time on their sixth try. Thursday's quarterfinal meeting was a rematch from earlier in the season where the two programs met in Denver with Hawai'I Pacific winning 7-2 over the Aggies.
Cameron fell behind quickly in doubles play to the Sharks with
Paula Gutierrez and
Angie Torres coming off the court first with an 8-1 loss on court two. The Aggies' top duo on court one,
Alina Gorina and
Zhenia Shviadok who are ranked No. 15 nationally went up 2-1 on HPU's No. 4 ranked pairing but they would drop the next seven games. Â
Mathilde Thibaudat and
Samantha Wood took a pair of late games on court three but they would lose 8-3 to allow Hawai'i Pacific to go up 3-0 on the Aggies.
Wood won by retirement early in singles to give CU their first point but the Sharks would take court-three 6-4, 6-2 with Shviadok falling, and Torres lost on court-four 6-2, 6-3 minutes later for the overall match win.
On the other courts, Gutierrez was battling back in set two but trailed 6-0, 4-5 on the first court. Gorina was near the end of her match on court two trailing 6-2 and 5-2. Thibaudat won her first set 7-6 and was behind 1-0 when the match was suspended.
"We just simply ran out of gas," said head coach
James Helvey. "No excuses, Hawai'I Pacific has a really outstanding team but yesterday's match took a lot out of us. When I found out we were playing at 8 a.m. this morning after long match we just played yesterday, I knew this was going to be tough for us."
Â
"It just took us too long to get going today but I have to give credit to our team they battled until the end today."
With the win Hawaii Pacific will move to 18-5 overall and advance to the Final Four.
Cameron will see their season end with a 23-4 record with two departing seniors,
Angie Torres and
Alina Gorina.
"Overall I'm just proud of the ladies on this squad, they were a tough group, and found ways to win matches this season," added Helvey.
