LAWTON – A big second half and double-double performances from
Jazzmine Robinson and
Markita Zeigler guided the Aggies to a 76-56 win over Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday night. The win for Cameron was their third in a row to bring their overall record to 4-6 and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play, Eastern New Mexico will go to 4-7 and 0-1 in the LSC.
The double-double by Robinson was her third in a row after leading all scorers on the floor with 19 points, she added 10 boards, five steals, and four assists. Zeigler had her career mark with 14 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive end, and 10 points for her first career double-double performance.
Brandi Leal knocked down three triples for a 14 point game, and
DJ Vallier came away with 10.
Cameron easily won the rebounding battle 41 to 24 over ENMU and pecked away 10 steals compared to one from the Zias.
"At the end of the day the win was on defense, and team defense and team effort," said head coach Tom Webb. "When we have 16 assists and nine turnovers it is a good game for us, and I am really proud of our bench, because that is what made the game for us. If they play well then the whole team plays well."Despite the final score, CU bounced back from a 0-10 start from the field and thanks to cold shooting by Eastern New Mexico, CU never trailed by more than four points. After playing a cat and mouse game in the middle section of the half, a three-pointer by Leal with 6:04 left gave the Aggies a 23-20 lead that they would hold onto into the intermission. However, ENMU remained in CU's rearview mirror with a slim two point, 31-29 advantage.
Robinson paced CU at the half with nine points with CU shooting 33.3 percent on the floor, and only 15.4 percent at arc.
Cameron's cold shooting quickly warmed in the second half after they busted through with an 8-2 run and after a Herl triple at the arc, CU opened up a 43-33 lead after three minutes into the second period. The Aggies continued to punch the throttle down on the Zias and opened up a 25 point lead with 6:35 left in the game before ending the night with a 20 point spread.
The Aggies shot 53.8 percent in the final 20 minutes and 42.4 percent for the night; ENMU went 38.6 on their side of the floor. Cameron also easily won the inside game with 32 points inside the paint, 18 more than the Zias.
Tori Tucker led the Zias with 12 points, while Sarah Stinnett and Shayla Williams both added 10 each.
Cameron will travel to West Texas A&M to face the Lady Buffs on Saturday at 2 p.m.
"West Texas is really good, they are better than they were last year when they went to the championship game, they are deeper, and tougher than most teams," added Webb. "We have played a tough schedule, so we are going to be prepared. We still have to go play, it's tough to play there, and all those other things, but at least we will be ready."
