Aggies Ousted In First Round Of PlayoffsApril 27, 2012
DENTON, Texas (April 27, 2012) ― Cameron was rudely welcomed to the Lone Star Conference Tournament Friday, dropping its opening round game to the number one seed Angelo State, 13-2.
“We got a tough draw, but we knew that coming in,” said Head Coach Beth Watson. “Angelo can go hit for hit with any team in the nation. Coming in, I felt like we could hit their pitching … but it didn’t work out that way.”
Cheyenne Brown took the circle for CU (17-32) and did well for the first couple of innings, but in the third inning the power of the RamBelles got to Brown. After allowing five runs in the inning, she was relieved by Kelsy Hebert. But Hebert did not fare any better, allowing five more runs in the inning without recording an out before giving way to Carrie Dilks.
Dilks would finish the final two innings, allowing two runs over the course of the game.
“You just can’t make mistakes against a team like this,” Watson said. “We had that one bad inning, but that was a big enough hole that we couldn’t get out of it.”
After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, the Aggies responded with two runs in the second to briefly take the lead. Sonia Foutch got the scored the first run, coming in from second on a double by her sister, Micah Foutch. Following a failed squeeze attempt that saw Amanda Karth thrown out at home, Tiffany Freeman brought in Micah Foutch on an RBI fielder’s choice.
For the rest of the game, CU failed to match the offensive output of ASU, allowing the 10-run run rule to come into effect.
Despite the early exit, Watson said she is proud of her team and the heart is showed throughout the season.
“I’m proud of this team,” the coach said. “We’ve fought all season for where we are. We had to overcome a couple of big injuries but never used that as an excuse … We showed heart and fought to always be competitive. I felt like we were. You can’t hang your hat on what could have been , so we will work hard to be better next season.”
