Developing Confidence In Your Athletes
November 3, 2011Confidence isn’t the only thing needed for young female athletes to be successful, but it may be the most significant thing. Understanding that confidence comes from many different areas of a persons life is also very important. Learning and understand different ways to influence your athlete into believing in themselves may be the difference between a state title and a below .500 record.
In the book, “The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches” by Jeff Janssen, M.S. and Greg Dale, Ph. D, they talk about seven ways to develop confidence in an athlete. Here they are:
1. Focus on Potential
2. Plant Seeds of Success
3. Sell Athletes on Themselves
4. Show Them a Simple and Specific Plan
5. Inspire Them to Work Hard
6. Set Them Up for Early Success
7. Accentuate the Positive
With the team that we have this year and the potential of greatest, we must pay attention for signs of loss of confidence. We must also work daily at improving our players self-confidence and inspiring them to be the best they can as fast as they can. Good luck with planting, watering, and growing your seeds of success. – Coach Webb
