Aggies Play Confident In Commerce

Lawton, Okla. (Oct. 15, 2011) —Cameron improved its conference record to 5-7 today with a four game victory over Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, Texas, 3-1. The victory moves Cameron ahead of Midwestern State (4-8) in the race for postseason play.

“We had some stretches where we played really well,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “Some stretches we played as well as we have in awhile. We played really hard and made a lot of hustle plays. That’s also the best we’ve blocked in quite a while … best in a long a time.”

Cameron (11-8, 5-7) came out in the first game firing on all cylinders, going on four three-point streaks and one four-point streak, en route to a 25-14 win. The tempo mellowed in the game two, as each team exchanged runs, but it was Lions on top as the game came to a close, 25-20.

The Aggies pulled ahead early in game three, 7-3, before Commerce pulled to within 1 at 13-12, but Cameron would go on to score seven of the next eight points, on its way to a 25-19 win. Cameron used the momentum of a 10-2 run, which started with Cameron trailing 11-8, to secure a game four victory and a match win for the Aggies.

Freshman Kelle Carver came on strong late, to finish with 14 kills to lead the Aggies. She also chipped in four and a half blocks to contribute 18.5 points total. Senior Adrienne Lawson added 13 kills to supplement the Aggie offense. Junior Julisa Ocasio provided the defensive support with 28 digs.

“Kelle(Carver) had four total blocks and they were all big at significant times,” Tabbert said. “Malyssa (Acton), offensively, was solid too. She bounced back. Sarah (Corbett) was solid. Offensively, she did damage … and she had some good net play. She (Corbett) made a number of effort plays in unique situations.

Cameron will now travel to Canyon, Texas to take on conference leading West Texas A&M (21-2, 12-1).
